Tricks and Tips: The Magic of Baking Soda

I’m not sure about you, but I’m bad with my pans. I once made maple baked french toast. Oh it was delicious (and when you freeze it, it reheats really well in the microwave!), but it cooked onto the pan and left a mess I couldn’t clean without totally scratching the pan. I took the lazy route: I threw the pan out.

When I saw these tips, I couldn’t help but think back to that one pan. Oh I know some people buy disposable ones for such meals (and probably the easiest!), but I thought these were interesting.

1. clean baked-on food and whatnot from pans with a dryer sheet: I found this tip at Apartment Therapy. I haven’t tried this but there are people who swear it works well. There are a few people who are iffy about using them to clean pans, but if you’re worried about it, there’s some more  natural, non-toxic ones. (Or you can use baking soda) All that you have to do is put warm water into the dirty pan and lay the dryer sheet flat in the water and let it sit overnight. In the morning, the baked-on stuff will have lifted off or you can easily get it off with a spatula.

2. Sometimes, after I’ve cooked fries or whatever else, an oily film is left on the tray that is next to impossible to clean. I’ve turned to use tin foil, but you can use a lot doing that. At One Good Thing, I found the tip of using baking soda and peroxide. Mix 1/4 cup of baking soda with a bit of peroxide, just enough to make a paste, and smear it over the pan. This is very cool! I am DEFINITELY going to try this because I have so many pans that look ugly.

3. Another way, is by using baking soda and vinegar. Again, I found this tip at Apartment Therapy. If you haven’t checked the site out, you really should. They have great ideas.What you need is a cup of vinegar, two tablespoons of baking soda and a cup of water (approximately). All that you have to do is fill the bottom of the pan with a layer of water, add the vinegar, and then bring the pan to boil. When it boils, remove it from the heat and add the baking soda. Then you just have to dump the pan and clean as usual.
